Short answer?
Oo.
Pero hindi dahil mas sikat na ang MariBank.
Hindi pa.
GCash says 94 million Filipinos have used its platform, with millions of merchants and users already deeply accustomed to paying through it. (GCash)
So paano matatalo ng mas maliit na MariBank ang ganitong kalaking kalaban?
Simple.
GCash taught Filipinos how to move money.
MariBank is teaching Filipinos something else:
Huwag mo lang galawin ang pera mo. Patubuin mo rin.
And that changes the game.
Imagine may ₱500,000 kang clinic reserve.
Sa GCash wallet, convenient siya.
Bayad dito.
Transfer doon.
QR dito.
Pero kapag nakita mong puwedeng nakaupo ang pera mo sa isang bank account earning 3.25% p.a. up to ₱1 million, with interest credited daily and free InstaPay and PESONet transfers, mapapaisip ka talaga. (MariBank)
GCash actually has GSave, pero savings there are offered through partner banks such as CIMB, BPI, Maybank and UNO Bank. (GCash Help Center)
MariBank?
The app is the bank.
And that distinction matters.
Because eventually, the biggest battle in fintech may not be:
“Saan ako magbabayad?”
It may become:
“Saan ko iiwan ang pera ko?”
GCash already won the habit of Filipinos saying:
“I-GCash mo na lang.”
MariBank now has a chance to create another habit:
“Iwan ko muna dito. Kumikita naman.”
And once Filipinos start thinking that way?
GCash may still be the app we use to spend.
But MariBank could become the place where we prefer to keep the money before we spend it.
At sa banking…
iyan ang perang mas mahalaga.
Hindi yung dumadaan.
Yung naiiwan.
