May 13th month pay ba ang veterinarian? A vet clinic guide to 13th month pay, proration, resignation, and taxes

December sa veterinary clinic usually means fully booked schedules, emergency cases, Christmas boarding, staff leaves, and one very predictable question:

“Doc, kailan po 13th month?”

Then sa side naman ng clinic owner:

“Pati ba veterinarian may 13th month? Paano yung bagong hire? Paano yung nag-resign? Taxable ba?”

Yes. Veterinary clinics and hospitals are not exempt from the rules on 13th month pay.

MAY 13TH MONTH PAY BA ANG VETERINARIAN?

If the veterinarian is an employee and rank-and-file, generally yes.

Hindi porke veterinarian, professional, or mataas ang sweldo ay automatically excluded na.

DOLE states that rank-and-file employees in the private sector are entitled to 13th month pay regardless of employment status, provided they have worked for at least one month during the calendar year. BWC DOLE

So sa veterinary clinic, this can include associate veterinarians, veterinary nurses and assistants, receptionists, cashiers, kennel attendants, laboratory staff, groomers, and other rank-and-file employees.

However, a genuinely managerial employee may not be covered by the statutory 13th month pay requirement. What matters is not simply the title “Head Vet” or “Clinic Manager,” but the actual authority and functions of the employee. Department of Labor and Employment

Likewise, a veterinarian who is genuinely an independent consultant or contractor, rather than an employee, is a different situation.

EH MAGKANO?

The basic formula is:

Total basic salary earned during the calendar year ÷ 12 = 13th month pay

Let’s use an associate veterinarian earning ₱60,000 basic salary per month.

If Doc worked January to December:

₱60,000 × 12 = ₱720,000

₱720,000 ÷ 12 =

₱60,000 13th month pay

Straightforward.

DOLE defines 13th month pay as at least one-twelfth of the total basic salary earned during the calendar year. BWC DOLE

PAANO KUNG JULY LANG NA-HIRE?

Prorated.

Example:

  • Basic salary: ₱60,000/month
  • Worked: July to December, or 6 months

₱60,000 × 6 = ₱360,000

₱360,000 ÷ 12 =

₱30,000 13th month pay

Hindi kailangan maka-one year bago maging entitled.

The employee only needs to have rendered at least one month of service during the calendar year. BWC DOLE

PAANO KUNG NAG-RESIGN ANG VET BEFORE DECEMBER?

May 13th month pa rin.

Resignation does not erase the 13th month pay already earned.

Suppose an associate veterinarian earns ₱60,000 per month and resigns effective August 31.

January to August = 8 months

₱60,000 × 8 = ₱480,000

₱480,000 ÷ 12 =

₱40,000 prorated 13th month pay

DOLE specifically recognizes resigned and terminated employees as entitled to proportionate 13th month pay. BWC DOLE

So hindi puwedeng sabihin:

“Nag-resign ka bago December, wala ka nang 13th month.”

The proportionate benefit was already earned.

DOLE also reiterated in January 2026 that final pay should generally be released within 30 days from separation, unless there is a more favorable company policy. Final pay includes prorated 13th month pay. Department of Labor and Employment

KASAMA BA OVERTIME, HOLIDAY PAY AT ALLOWANCES?

Generally, the computation is based on basic salary.

Benefits such as overtime pay, premium pay, night shift differential, holiday pay, unused vacation or sick leave conversion, and allowances that are not considered part of basic salary are generally excluded.

However, if certain benefits have been integrated into basic salary through agreement, company policy, or established practice, the treatment can be different. Department of Labor and Employment

That is why payroll should compute using the employee’s actual basic salary earned, especially if there were absences, salary changes, or periods without basic salary.

13TH MONTH PAY BA ANG CHRISTMAS BONUS?

No.

These are two different things.

13th month pay = mandatory statutory benefit

Christmas bonus = generally discretionary

A clinic may choose to give an additional cash bonus, groceries, incentives, raffle prizes, or other Christmas benefits on top of the 13th month pay.

But the required 13th month pay cannot simply disappear because the employer gave another Christmas bonus instead. Department of Labor and Employment

TAXABLE BA ANG ₱60,000 13TH MONTH PAY?

Usually, no, assuming the employee’s total 13th month pay and other similar benefits covered by the exemption do not exceed the statutory threshold.

Under current tax rules, up to ₱90,000 of 13th month pay and other benefits combined may be excluded from taxable compensation. BIR CDN

So if our veterinarian receives:

13th month pay: ₱60,000

and no other similar taxable benefits that push the total beyond ₱90,000:

The entire ₱60,000 falls within the ₱90,000 tax-exempt ceiling.

But suppose the clinic gives:

  • 13th month pay: ₱60,000
  • Additional Christmas bonus: ₱50,000

Total = ₱110,000

Tax-exempt ceiling = ₱90,000

Potential taxable excess = ₱20,000

The important point is that the ₱90,000 threshold generally applies to the combined 13th month pay and other covered benefits, not ₱90,000 separately for every bonus.

KAILAN DAPAT IBIGAY?

Under the latest DOLE guidance available, the 13th month pay must be fully paid not later than December 24.

Employers may divide the payment during the year, but the employee must receive the full amount due by the deadline. BWC DOLE

FOR VETERINARY CLINIC OWNERS

For veterinary clinic owners, magandang reminder ito:

The 13th month pay should not be an unexpected December expense.

Kung may employee kang ₱60,000 ang monthly basic salary, theoretically you should already think of another approximately ₱5,000 per month as the monthly accrual toward that employee’s 13th month pay:

₱60,000 ÷ 12 = ₱5,000

Set it aside every month and December becomes much easier on your cash flow.

FOR VETERINARY EMPLOYEES

And for veterinary employees:

Your 13th month pay is not simply a Christmas gift from your employer.

The Christmas bonus may be a gift.

The 13th month pay is a benefit you earned under the law.
