How many hours does a dog need to sleep in a day?

Sleep is just as essential for our dogs as it is for us. While humans typically need 7–9 hours of rest each night, dogs have very different sleep patterns that depend on their age, breed, and lifestyle. Understanding how much sleep your pet needs can help you spot signs of good health—or underlying problems.

Puppies: Growing Requires Rest

Puppies are bundles of energy when awake, but they actually spend most of their time asleep. On average, puppies need 18–20 hours of sleep per day. This is because their bodies and brains are rapidly developing. Sleep fuels their growth, strengthens their immune systems, and helps them learn and process new experiences.

Adult Dogs: Energy Levels and Lifestyle Matter

Most healthy adult dogs sleep between 12–14 hours a day. Unlike humans who consolidate sleep into one long stretch, dogs nap throughout the day in shorter cycles. Active working breeds such as Border Collies or Belgian Malinois may sleep a little less since they are stimulated by training, tasks, and exercise. Meanwhile, more relaxed breeds like Bulldogs or Basset Hounds can sleep longer hours.

Senior Dogs: Slowing Down with Age

As dogs grow older, they require more rest to recover from daily activities. Senior dogs may sleep 14–18 hours per day, often taking more frequent naps. Changes in their sleep habits can also reflect health issues such as arthritis, hypothyroidism, or cognitive decline, so any dramatic increase or decrease in sleep should be discussed with a veterinarian.

Why Dogs Sleep More Than Humans

Dogs spend less time in deep REM (rapid eye movement) sleep compared to humans. Instead, they cycle through lighter sleep stages, making them more alert to sounds and movements around them. This is why your dog can seem to be dozing yet still bark at the faintest noise outside.

When to Worry About Sleep Patterns

While extra napping is normal, certain changes should be checked by a vet:

  • Excessive lethargy (sleeping all the time with little energy when awake).
  • Restlessness at night (pacing, whining, or difficulty settling down).
  • Sudden changes in sleep habits (either more or less sleep than usual).

These can signal medical issues such as infections, pain, metabolic problems, or anxiety.

Helping Your Dog Get Better Sleep

You can support your dog’s natural sleep needs by:

  • Providing a quiet, comfortable space for rest.
  • Keeping a consistent daily routine with exercise and mealtimes.
  • Avoiding overstimulation before bedtime.
  • Ensuring regular veterinary checkups to rule out medical causes of poor sleep.

Final Thoughts

On average, most dogs need between 12–14 hours of sleep daily, with puppies and seniors requiring even more. As responsible pet owners, it’s important to respect their need for rest while keeping an eye out for unusual changes in sleep patterns. Healthy sleep is the foundation of a happy, active, and long life for your furry companion.
