As veterinarians and pet owners, we love our dogs and cats. But let’s be honest. There are days when they decide that our sofa is the perfect place to urinate or even defecate.
When that happens, most people simply wipe the surface, spray deodorizer, and hope for the best.
Unfortunately, that’s usually not enough.
Cat urine, in particular, penetrates deep into the upholstery and cushion. Even if the stain disappears, urine residues and odor-causing compounds can remain trapped within the fabric. The same goes for dog urine and fecal contamination.
Recently, I decided to deep clean one of our fabric sofas using a portable upholstery extractor.
The difference was impressive.
The machine sprayed a cleaning solution deep into the fabric while simultaneously extracting the dirty water. After several passes, the stain disappeared, the odor was greatly reduced, and the sofa looked almost brand new.

Here’s how I did it:
- Vacuum the sofa first to remove dust, pet hair, and loose debris.
- Fill the machine with clean water and an upholstery cleaning solution.
- Slowly spray and gently scrub the stained area.
- Immediately extract the dirty water.
- Repeat the process until the extracted water becomes clear.
- Allow the sofa to dry completely before using it again.
One thing I learned is that surface cleaning only addresses what you can see.
Deep cleaning removes what you cannot see.
