Sometimes the People Who Knew Us First See Us Last

Have you ever noticed that sometimes the people who knew you in veterinary school are not always the ones who believe in you the most?

It is something I have observed over the years.

Not because they are bad people.

Not because they intentionally want others to fail.

But perhaps because they remember us differently.

They remember the student who was still learning.

The classmate who struggled with certain subjects.

The young veterinarian who was trying to find his place in the profession.

And sometimes, it can be difficult to reconcile that image with the person standing before them today.

Growth Often Happens Gradually

Growth often happens gradually.

We do not notice it in ourselves, and others may not notice it either.

Years of experience, countless cases, mistakes, lessons, successes, failures, and personal sacrifices slowly shape who we become.

Yet some people continue to see us through the lens of the past.

Perhaps that is why support occasionally comes from unexpected places.

  • A client may have more confidence in you than a former classmate.
  • A colleague from another generation may encourage you more than someone who has known you for years.
  • A stranger may recognize your work before a friend does.

And that is perfectly alright.

Everyone Sees the World Differently

Everyone views the world through their own experiences.

Not everyone will immediately see your growth.

Not everyone will understand your journey.

What matters is that you continue moving forward with humility, gratitude, and a willingness to keep learning.

What Truly Matters

In the end, our goal is not to prove ourselves to everyone.

Our goal is simply to become a little better than we were yesterday.

And perhaps that is enough.
