They Were Playing a Different Game

There was a time when I blamed the competition for everything.

If another clinic was growing faster, I assumed they had a better location.

If they had more clients, I assumed they were spending more on marketing.

If they were earning more, I assumed they were simply lucky.

It was easier that way.

Because blaming the competition meant I didn’t have to examine my own strategy.

Then one day I realized something that changed the way I looked at business.

I stopped blaming the competition when I realized they were playing a different game.

While I was reacting,

they were positioning.

That difference is enormous.

Most veterinary clinics spend their time reacting.

Reacting to competitors.

Reacting to declining sales.

Reacting to staff resignations.

Reacting to client complaints.

Reacting to market changes.

The problem with reaction is that it always puts you one step behind.

The clinics that eventually dominate their markets are rarely the fastest reactors.

They are the best positioners.

Years before everyone was talking about feline medicine, some veterinarians were already building cat-focused services.

Years before diagnostics became a major revenue center, some clinics were already investing in laboratory capabilities.

Years before personal branding became common, some veterinarians were already building trust and influence online.

What looked like luck was often preparation.

What looked like overnight success was often years of positioning.

Business is not won by chasing every move your competitors make.

It is won by deciding where the market is going and arriving there before everyone else.

That was one of the biggest lessons I learned as a veterinarian and entrepreneur.

The goal is not to beat the competition at their game.

The goal is to understand the game they are playing, then create a better one.

Because by the time most people notice an opportunity, the leaders have already positioned themselves to own it.

That is why some clinics always seem ahead.

They are not reacting to the future.

They saw it coming.
