One of the most sensitive situations in veterinary clinics and pet supply stores involves product returns and exchanges.
Clients sometimes ask:
“Pwede po bang i-return?”
“Hindi na po kasi kakainin ng pet ko.”
“Nakahanap po ako ng mas mura.”
“Nagbago po isip namin.”
As veterinary professionals, we always try to help. But many pet owners may not realize that certain veterinary products cannot simply be returned once released.
And there are important reasons behind this.
—
Why Veterinary Products Are Different
Unlike ordinary retail items, many veterinary products involve:
- Animal safety
- Strict storage conditions
- Cold-chain handling
- Sterility requirements
- Prescription regulations
- Biosecurity concerns
For example:
- Prescription medications cannot safely be re-dispensed once released.
- Opened diets, supplements, and consumables may become contaminated.
Once these products leave the clinic, we can no longer guarantee their quality, safety, or proper handling.

What Philippine Law Says
Under Republic Act No. 7394 or the Consumer Act of the Philippines, consumers are protected against defective or misrepresented products. Businesses may be required to replace, repair, or refund items with legitimate defects. (Lawphil)
However, the law also recognizes that businesses are not automatically required to accept returns for:
- Change of mind
- Wrong choice by the buyer
- Finding cheaper prices elsewhere
- Misuse or mishandling after purchase
The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) also clarifies that while defective products may qualify for replacement, businesses can implement reasonable return policies for non-defective items. (DTI Fair Trade FAQ)

In Veterinary Practice, Safety Comes First
Our policies are not meant to make things difficult for clients.
They exist to protect:
- Your pets
- Other patients
- Product safety
- Medical integrity
- Fairness to all customers
Imagine a medication or prescription diet being returned after improper storage at home.
Releasing that same item to another pet could potentially compromise patient safety.
This is why many veterinary clinics allow returns or exchanges only under specific conditions such as:
- Defective products
- Wrong item dispensed
- Manufacturing defects
- Size exchanges for unused accessories
—
We Encourage Clients to Double-Check Before Purchase
Before releasing products, veterinary clinics often encourage clients to:
- Confirm the correct product
- Verify dosage and size
- Ask questions before payment
- Inspect items upon release
Good communication helps avoid misunderstandings later on.
—
At the End of the Day
Veterinary medicine is not just about selling products.
It is about responsibility.
Every medicine, vaccine, diagnostic kit, supplement, and prescription diet released by a veterinary clinic carries professional accountability behind it.
We appreciate clients who understand that these policies are designed not only to protect the business, but more importantly, to protect the health and safety of animals.
