Inspiration Over Insecurity in Veterinary Practice
By Dr. Geoff Carullo, DVM, FPCCP, DPCVSCA
In our profession, it’s easy to feel something stir inside you when you see another veterinarian succeed.
- A new clinic.
- A fully equipped diagnostic setup.
- A packed schedule.
- A growing brand.
And sometimes, you pause. Not because you’re jealous—but because you start asking yourself, “Why not me?”
Let’s be honest. That quiet discomfort you feel when someone “flexes” their success is human. It’s not always envy. Sometimes, it’s just a reminder of where you are—and where you’re not yet.
But here’s where it matters.
What you do with that feeling will either build you… or break you.
Because the success of another veterinarian is not a threat to your journey. It is proof that growth is possible within the same profession you’re in.
Every modern clinic you see did not appear overnight.
Every diagnostic machine was once an impossible expense.
Every “successful vet” you scroll past once struggled with the same doubts you have now.
What you’re seeing is not just success.
You’re seeing years of risk, sacrifice, sleepless nights, and decisions no one else witnessed.
So instead of reacting with irritation or silent comparison, use it differently.
Use it as direction.
If another clinic has better equipment, ask yourself what steps you can take to slowly upgrade yours.
If another veterinarian has built a strong brand, study how they communicate and position themselves.
If someone is earning more, don’t resent it—understand it.
Because in veterinary practice, growth is not a race. It’s a strategy.
The real danger is not that others are moving forward.
The real danger is when you stay stuck—watching, comparing, and doing nothing.
Shift your focus.
Put your energy into improving your systems, your medicine, your client experience, and your business decisions. Even small, consistent improvements compound over time.
One day, you will look back and realize that you’ve built something you’re proud of.
Not for validation.
Not for comparison.
But as proof of how far you’ve come.
And when that day comes, your story might be the one that inspires another veterinarian who is exactly where you are right now.
So the question is simple:
When you see others succeed, do you let it discourage you…
or do you let it drive you?
